Every little step counts

Every little step counts

 14 Jun 2018

With father’s day around the corner, it’s always important to take a step back and appreciate all those who have guided us from where we are, to where we need to be. Highlighted on this day because for me, it has always been my dad.

A man who, with drive, ambition and passion, worked his way from the ground up to build his own empire both professionally and personally. This man has guided me growing up giving me honest, sincere and most of all, timely and necessary input in my own personal and professional development.

Analysing the attributes that made him successful allowed me to adopt thought processes and behaviour changes to tackle challenges I faced during my career. These, I believe, can be food for thought to anyone thinking about how to progress through their career.

To progress, we must be willing to go the extra mile and put in some extra time. This doesn’t just happen overnight however, sometimes progress can be as little as taking the first step. Maybe your career isn’t quite what you thought it was. That first step could be as small as looking at what else is out there, what skills you have gained and where these could take you. This is progress.

Sometimes progress can be looking at our own behaviour. We have all been familiar at one point in our lives with the dreaded Monday feeling, that feeling that starts our week off with negativity, which leads to underperforming behaviours. A small step could be simply looking at the why. Why do you feel like this and what can you change. Hold the power in your career and simply ask yourself why. This is progress.

Other times, progress can be setting goals. Where are you going? People can guide you and help you along your path but you need to think forward for this to happen. Set some goals, aspire for something greater. Aim for the top but start with step one. This is progress.

Whoever your role models in life are, realise that they all share the same traits, everyone starts somewhere and everyone progresses. Appreciate those who have helped you get to where you are and always think to yourself, I’m here now, how can I make more progress.
