What is your name?
Karen Livingstone Welstead

What do you do for a living in 10 words or less?
Director of recruitment consultancy, Owner of interior design company.

Where do you currently reside?
Glasgow

1. Describe yourself in 3 words?

( I don’t want to quote Georgia from Love Island but I am... ) Loyal. Impatient. Hard working.

2. What did you want to do when you were a kid?

Vet. Archaeologist. Lawyer. Writer. Full-time reader of the Laura Ashley catalogue, although I was not sure if that was even a thing.

3. What memories do you have of your first ever job?

My first proper job was as a room service waitress at the Hilton. Going into people’s rooms with kippers first thing on a Saturday morning was an interesting aromatic experience.

4. Have there been any people in your career that have influenced or inspired you?

I think my dad inspired me to want to make money and my mum has inspired me on how to spend it. There were many people from my time at Goldman Sachs who inspired me but I have had a really mixed career path so most of my choices have been made on instinct.

5. What would you want to tell your 20-year-old self, knowing what you know now?

Don’t waste time on things you don’t enjoy - at a macro level, I mean. There is always a certain amount of drudgery in your career but only do that if the end goal is really what you want.

6. What would you class as your biggest achievement so far?

I am proud of having made difficult choices and maybe more creative ones. I’m also very proud of my family. They are an enormous challenge (ha!) but are good kids.

7. From your career so far, what has been your best job and why?

I loved my first job at Goldman Sachs. I worked with 3 hilarious guys who were old school bankers. They taught me loads but mainly we had really good laugh. Plus I was living in London for the first time and earning reasonable money. All of which I blew.

8. Tell us what a typical day at work looks like?

Up. Gets kids sorted or try to convince husband to do it then sneak off. If I am with kids drop them at school after much beseeching and possibly some shouting. Coffee. Meet my removals boys, take furniture to property, oversee unloading of the van, meet my handyman, discuss plans for the property then leave him to it. Make calls in the car. Probably one trip to Ikea every 3 days for extra items or the next job. Meeting for future jobs. Back to the property to hang pictures, make up beds and move small objects an inch here or there. I try to get home for school finishing even if the nanny is there to cook or even just to ignore the kids but have them know I am there (ha again). Family time then I will work most evenings putting together proposals or buying for upcoming projects. Watch love island. Look on Instagram. Tea. Bed.

9. Do you have any morning rituals?

Em. Same as you. Wash, dress. I have to paint on my eyebrows.  Coffee. Possibly shout at someone or the dog.

10. What is your favourite movie?

Oh, nothing cool. I love Baby Boom. Yes, honestly.

11. Tell us something about yourself that not many people would know?

I think people who meet me quickly know everything there is to know about me because I over-share. However they might not all know that I have an overwhelming need to rescue animals. I often listen carefully at bins, hoping to find abandoned kittens. Puppies will do. Not rats.
