TFI - Megan Rowe

 1 Apr 2022

What is your name? Megan
What do you do for a living in 10 words? Chat to new people each day on behalf of Red!
Where do you currently reside? West End of Glasgow
  1. Describe yourself in 3 words?
Shoe obsessed.
  1. Tell us what your typical day at work looks like?
At the moment, only a few weeks into my role as Recruitment & Marketing Administrator – a lot of learning! But once I’ve got to grips with it all a little more, my day to day will mainly consist of creating job adverts, resourcing, some admin-based tasks and handling all things social media based! I’m discovering new things about the world of recruitment everyday which I’m finding really interesting!
  1. What would you want to tell your 20-year-old self-knowing what you know now?
To not worry about switching from a degree in French to studying English Literature as it turns out my future career won’t be directly related to either – but I’ll still love it!
  1. What would you class as your biggest achievement so far?
Travelling to France to work as an au pair when I’d only just left school myself! I was looking after three kids, who I thought had a basic understanding of English but it turns out they couldn’t really speak a word of English, so I found myself quickly improving my own French but also learning how to communicate with the kids in other ways! We did a lot of communicating and learning through play and I found it really rewarding to see our relationship develop despite the language barrier (and even more rewarding when we could finally converse in one another’s language!)
  1. What was your favourite programme as a child?
I had a lot of favourite programmes growing up so will go with the answer that I apparently gave on my first day at nursery – Emmerdale and Coronation Street! My mum was both embarrassed that the nursery teachers would think I was allowed to watch soaps at the age of 4, but also flummoxed as she didn’t actually watch either programme herself so had no idea where I’d plucked them from!!
  1. Who did you idolise when growing up?
Caitlin Moran – still do! Growing up the oldest of 8 siblings and home-schooled from the age of 11, Caitlin educated herself through her local library, won The Observer’s Young Reporter of the year at age 15 and landed her first journalism job at 16. Her columns for The Times, which she’s written since 1992, are a mix of politics, popular culture and the personal - she’s particularly interested in exploring feminism and women’s equality. Despite her obvious success, she still appears so grounded…a true legend, in my opinion!
  1. What memories do you have of your first ever job?
I did a few one-off babysitting jobs for people in the village whilst still at school, but I suppose my first proper job would be au pairing in France when I was 18 – a summer filled with memories of swimming in the Dordogne River, eating my body weight in cheese, teaching the kids how to play cricket, and learning lots of French slang! All in all, not a bad first job at all!
  1. If you could invite anyone (dead or alive) for dinner, who would you invite and why?
Lily James – in my mind she’s the present-day Marilyn Monroe, I think she seems like the most fun, down to earth person and would love to quiz her about the different roles she’s played in the past (and if it ACTUALLY took hair and makeup 4 hours each day to get her Pamela Anderson ready for her latest role in Pam & Tommy!) She’s my girl crush.
I’d also treasure Maya Angelou as a dinner guest – I read her autobiographies as a teenager and still can’t quite believe everything that she managed to achieve and overcome in the face of adversity. I’d feel honoured to have a sit down and chat about her life experiences.
  1. Tell us something about yourself that not many people would know?
I’m terrible with spicy food but get really embarrassed just ordering a korma when out for curry as I feel it makes me look boring – so I’ll often order something spicier then sit dying the entire meal as I attempt to eat it!
