Teamworking to Win

Teamworking to Win

 6 Jul 2017

July is one of my favourite months for sport, with both Andy Murray to cheer on at Wimbledon and the Tour de France inspiring not only my next holiday but always gets me thinking about sportsmanship and teamwork. It is well known that teamwork is central to cycling and in the Tour individual riders work together to support the leader to the final win. While the domestiques do not win individual races, such as king of the mountains (for my favourite dotty shirt) or the grand prize, they may take a turn as team leader in future races. So what can we learn from this supportive role and what motivates these riders to complete the race knowing they will not come first?

The winner cannot win without the team and the trust each member of the team builds is essential for communication, shared sense of purpose and strategy. All act in the interest of the leader and the ultimate goal of winning the race. Cooperation, innovation and motivation drives the contribution of every team member who collectively work to a common goal. So too, in our workplaces there are different characters with different motivations and approaches to work. As employers it is important to identify your 'domestiques' and your 'leaders' as you need them all to succeed. Your leaders may move on and lead elsewhere and your many domestiques will drive your business and some will be your next leader. Stay close to your team and enjoy the ride.
