Back to the core of life...

Back to the core of life...

 12 Oct 2017

Have started reading a great book called “Tools Of Titans” by Tim Ferriss and one of the first chapters talks about an ex-Wall Street banker that gave up his stressful work-life to set up 2 gruelling running competitions, The Death Race and the Spartan Race, aimed at getting back to the core of life (or death). His aim was to purposefully try and ‘break’ people, which may sound a bit harsh, but got us talking in the office about living life to the full!

These days, with the advances in technology, we can all feel that life is getting on top of us; we are permanently contactable, always distracted; I often find myself watching my favourite show on Netflix (currently Peaky Blinders) whilst also checking my phone to see if anyone has put a more current selfie on Facebook, an interesting blog on Linkedin, if that email from a candidate/client came through, or to check whether Donald Trump has decided to start World War III.

My way of switching off from all this is by running (a sport that I have relatively recently taken up) and I certainly feel that getting outside (normally in the pouring Scottish rain) helps to clear my mind. I don’t listen to music when running as I like to hear the sounds of nature.

To put all of these random thoughts in order, would be interested in your opinions and suggestions on how to detach from our crazy lives and just be. I am a long way from taking part in a Death Race but can certainly see the benefits of pushing yourself to the ultimate limit whilst getting back to the basics of life as a human being.
