The Friday Interview

What is your name?
Matthew Welstead

What do you do for a living in 10 words?
Run the best recruitment company you have never heard of.

Where do you currently reside?
Glasgow

  1. Tell us about the worst interview you’ve had so far?
I remember back in my days as a junior banker going for a job as a Derivatives Trader, my background was all in Equities and Capital Markets, and I thought I had a good understanding of Derivatives products….well I had a rude awakening, some of the questions they asked me went so far over my head it was laughable. Suffice to say I didn’t get the job.

  1. What did you want to do when you were a kid?
I really wanted to be a Fighter Pilot – I desperately wanted to emulate Tom Cruise in Top Gun – and I was pretty close to becoming one. At the age of 16, I applied for a Bursary through University with the RAF and passed all of the tests but got tripped up in the interview (again!). The question I failed on was how I would handle being ordered to bomb a weapons depot next to a school, and I fumbled through an answer that tried to keep everyone happy when I think they just wanted me to say I would shut up and follow my orders…oops.

  1. What was the best piece of advice you received in your career?
Have received plenty of career advice over the years but one piece that stick with me came from an ex-boss. Always stay true to yourself and your principles – integrity is key.

  1. Who did you idolise when growing up?
Haha. Tom Cruise? No, I don’t think I really idolised anyone. Plenty of people influenced me positively but don’t think I idolised anyone.

  1. Do you have any morning rituals?
My morning ritual normally involves trying NOT to shout at my 3 children (and dog) as we all try and get out of the door in the morning. I have to have a cup of tea as soon as I wake up. Unfortunately I don’t have the time in the morning to meditate like a Shaolin Monk, as much as I would like to.

  1. What do you enjoy the most about your current job?
I genuinely love the team I work with and that helps me enjoy coming into work every day. I like to involve everyone in all strategic decisions and hear everyone’s point of view. We are a small company and our people are our greatest asset, they make us what we are. We all have the same sense of purpose and what we want to achieve.

  1. Is there one book that you have read more than twice?
We are going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen - my son is obsessed.

  1. What memories do you have of your first ever job?
My first ever job was at a Hardware and Garden store in a Market town in Dorset. I used to have to advise people on the best grass seed for their gardens and lift MASSIVE bags of compost into people’s cars; nobody gave you health and safety training about lifting heavy items in those days so no wonder my back is goosed!

  1. What is an embarrassing thing that not many people would know about you? (for example, have you ever been on a game show or something similar)
Don’t really like to admit it but I was once on a Prime Time Saturday night dating show that involved the legendary Cilla Black…oh the shame – can we edit that out…?
