Marine Manager required for a temporary contract (3 – 6 months) based in New Zealand. 
 
As Marine Manager you will be responsible and accountable for providing leadership to the Masters and all Deck Crew across all company vessels.  The Marine Manager will work within the Marine and Safety team to ensure continuous improvement and will also be the Designated Person Ashore for seafaring staff
 
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT
  • Strong practical experience at Senior Maritime operational level.
  • Strong experience in:
    • RoRo Passenger operations.
    • Service-related industry
    • Working at a senior level within a highly competitive environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Safety, Quality and Risk management systems in the maritime industry.
  • Proven Management experience with knowledge of:
    • Performance Management processes (setting KPI’s, monitoring progress, 1:1 conversations, implementing development plans and managing poor performance)
    • Disciplinary processes
    • On the job training
    • Roster Management
  • Experience of budget management and other financial management skills.
  • Experience with a range Microsoft Software packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Master Mariner foreign going qualification or demonstrated industry experience
 
JOB DESCRIPTION 
  • Ensure the fleet holds valid trading and survey certificates at all times.
  • Monitor navigational practices to ensure standards are maintained.
  • Liaise with Maritime NZ, MCA and Class on regulatory and technical issues.
  • Monitor and ensure the emergency response capability of the ships and organization is maintained to high standards.
  • Ensures Company policy and procedures comply with National and International Safety Management codes and are in line with Industry best practice
  • Support the Masters to carry out their duties safely and efficiently
  • Ensure the standards for shipboard maintenance, including LSA, FFE Fabric Maintenance and tanks and spaces are maintained.
  • Liaise with the Ship Operations Manager, vessels and terminals to achieve safe and efficient port operations, including use of MRM between vessel and terminals.
  • Ensure the dockings and surveys are undertaken efficiently, timely, as budgeted and in accordance with manufacturer and regulatory standards.
  • Oversee shipboard use of contractors for the day to day operation of the Deck Department ensuring that the services are delivered in line with their contract
  • Overall responsibility for the safety management system and all related operational policies and procedures
  • Monitor fleet and business compliance with National and International requirements.
  • Oversee Ship Incident investigations carried out by the Marine Team or Ships Safety Officer as appropriate including the timely and through investigation of all shipboard incidents and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Provide leadership to the Marine team and Deck Department that result in innovation, initiative, ownership of problems, personnel accountability, and engagement in the business.
  • Manage performance in a way that provides staff with a clear understanding of their objectives and the performance and behaviours expected of them.
  • Financial accountability for the management of the Marine team, including the Deck Department budgets ensuring that we are optimising spend, staying within budget and measuring our return on investment against customer related activities.
  • A focus of this role will be to deliver an operating model which reduces costs across expenditure such as labour and external contract costs.
  • Develop and implement a strategy and KPI plan for the Marine team in conjunction with the GM
  • Continually review operational practices in order to suggest improvements and to ensure operational practices reflect best practice and optimal efficiency.
  • As Designated Person Ashore verify and monitor all safety and pollution prevention activities in the operation of each ship.
