Our Southampton based Maritime client are looking for a Ship Manager to join their team. Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, the Ship Manager will be responsible for ensuring the company vessels are maintained to a standard in compliance with international and national legislation, in a timely and cost-effective manner.

In addition, the Ship Manager will be expected to follow best ship management practices: giving absolute regard to safety of life at sea and protection of the environment at all times.
 
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT 
  • Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer certificate of competency or equivalent technical degree level
  • High degree of commercial awareness, with significant seafaring experience in the role of Chief Engineer or a similar technical management role
  • Experience working in shore based engineering management required
  • Working in marine aggregate industry distinct advantageous
  • Required hands on pro-active leadership style
  • An innovative thinker, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of management
  • Must be able to approach problems and situations methodically and be capable of making tough decisions and communicating effectively
 
JOB DESCRIPTION  
  • Communication with state authorities; managing the safe operation of a nominated number of company vessels ensuring compliance with current legislation and class and company regulations
  • Ensure vessels are fully and correctly equipped and maintained in accordance with class requirements, the company planned maintenance system, fleet directives and good engineering practice
  • Undertake regular and frequent inspections of allocated and other company vessels as directed by the Tech Ops manager, in order to continually assess their condition and maintenance requirements and to fully document such inspections at least twice yearly
  • Evaluate spares and stores requisitions and orders and authorize purchases of same to ensure an adequate supply of spares and stores whilst monitoring and controlling costs within budget
  • Ensure that all technical defects and deficiencies are reported and dealt with in a timely manner and made good as soon as practicable
  • Produce a comprehensive and effective repair / maintenance specification for submission to vessel crew and all appropriate contractors in preparation for any planned maintenance stop or survey dry docking
  • Prepare a detailed cost forecast specifically for any such planned maintenance or dry-dock periods for approval by the Technical Ops manager and managing director and to report daily throughout the maintenance period the progress of works and anticipated financial commitment
  • Attend the vessel during and throughout any such maintenance stop / dry-docking to supervise the work, support the crew and contractors and generally manage the projects
  • In conjunction with the operations manager and other ship managers, prepare operating budgets and forecasts for the vessels under own management, preparing estimates as required and ensuring any special circumstances concerning own vessels are taken into account.
  • Monitor all expenditure areas of own budgets, ensuring awareness at all times of actual costs and to keep expenditure within budget levels
  • To be on call to provide assistance to own assigned vessels or on a rota call system for the fleet
  • Participate in accident and incident investigation and monitor assigned vessel’s H&S performance
  • In conjunction with the Operations Manager, monitor crew performance and compliance with company SMS
  • Co-operate with the ship management team, investigate and make recommendations regarding significant CAPEX projects
  • Any other duties that may be required within the Fleet Management department
